Public presentation of the touch, sound and large-print
Atlas of maps of the Ile-de-France public transport
network for blind and partially sighted people
A world first to enable blind and partially sighted people to form a mental picture of the region and its public transport networks and prepare their travel routes. Published by the RATP’s Accessibility Group, these Maps have been produced in partnership with the City on the Move Institute (IVM), IRAG and APAM, with backing and funding from the Ile-de-France Region and the STIF.

THIS ATLAS OF MAPS IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SETS:
Public transport networks - Metro, Tram, Bus Mobilien, RER
A sequence of maps is associated with a specific transport line. There is an alphabetical index of stations which is used to find the location and times of stops. Captions, tabs and an index, embossed or large-print graphic coding, combined with a voice description and individualised tourist commentary (more than 14 hours potential listening, more than 800 sound files).
Transport hubs – Forty-five within Paris's first ring
The areas outside Paris, where public transport methods are different, are presented schematically using the same map and list system. They are divided into quarters: North-East, South-East, South-West and North-West. The alphabetical index of towns and villages is followed by a chronological list of bus routes with their destinations. There is a voice description of local features, together with the main stations in each transport hub. (More than 7 hours of potential listening, more than 200 descriptions, almost 400 sound files)
THE ATLAS IS AVAILABLE IN TWO VERSIONS:
An embossed version for blind people
Each 32 X 37 folder is designed to be read by touch. Maps and lines have several levels of relief, which can be distinguished by touch. The embossing technique used in the printing offers great clarity in the protrusion of edges, in the profiles of points and lines, in the roughness of the textures. This formal clarity is a crucial guarantee of quality. This version of the Atlas consists of seven folders together with seven audio CDs.
A large-print version for partially sighted people
For greater ease of reading, the colour coding of the lines is maintained, but the contrasts have been reinforced. With the folder format, pages can be extracted to allow people to use their own magnification methods. The point size of the characters varies to reflect the hierarchical nature of the information. This version of the Atlas consists of two folders each accompanied by three CDs for the Transport Network and four for the transport hubs.
USE OF THE DIFFERENT MODULES OF THE ATLAS:
La consultation se fait par livrets thématiques, Métro, Bus et Tram, RER, pôle N-E, pôle S-E, pôle S-O, pôle N-O. Une page « légende » décline les codes graphiques, une page « carte » présente une ligne schématisée en référence à la silhouette orientée du territoire. En vis-à-vis, une page « ligne » indique la totalité des stations et correspondances de cette même ligne ainsi que les renvois possibles à d’autres lignes de transport, en lien avec l’index. L’information sonore (sur CD) décrit le parcours de la ligne et donne d’éventuelles informations touristiques aux abords des stations, arrêts ou gares.
AVEC L’APAM, DES SEANCES D’INITIATION POUR LES FORMATEURS ET LE PUBLIC:
La diffusion de ces Atlas s’appuie sur un réseau de partenaires associatifs ou d’instituts de formation coordonné par l’Association pour les personnes aveugles et malvoyantes (APAM), qui aideront à faire connaître et à utiliser cet outil. Des séances de formation pour les formateurs et les utilisateurs sont organisées par l’APAM auprès d’associations spécialisées comme l’Association nationale des jeunes aveugles (INJA), l’Association Paul Guinot, l’Association Valentin Haüy (AVH), le Comité Paris Île-de-France, le Centre de formation et de réadaptation professionnelle (CFRP), etc.
Edités par la Mission Accessibilité de la RATP, ces Atlas ont été réalisés en partenariat avec l’Institut pour la ville en mouvement (IVM), l’IRAG et l’APAM, avec le soutien et le financement de la Région Ile-de-France et du STIF
Une équipe pluridisciplinaire pilotée par l’Institut pour la ville en mouvement a conçu ces Atlas et suivi leur réalisation. Elle était composée d’experts de la RATP, de la Cité des sciences et de l’industrie, de l’INJA (Institut national des jeunes aveugles), de l’IRAG (Institut de Recherche en Applications Gravées). Les services du Syndicat des Transports d’Ile-de-France(STIF) et de la SNCF, des experts indépendants français et étrangers, ont été consultés et ont participé au comité de pilotage.
La remise officielle des Atlas aura lieu à l’occasion du Salon Autonomic
